GET INTO THE ACT - ZOOKEEPERS
by Tony Sienzant
Zookeepers is a fortysomething's dream, playing a mix of acoustic and electric rock, pop and blues with the emphasis on the 1970s.
At a Zookeepers' show, you're sure to hear the radio faves from Van Morrison, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones and The Who, as well as choice selections from more newer groups such as the Goo Goo Dolls.
But just when you think you know what this North Plainfield, N.J. four-piece is all about, along comes a splash of soul-funk in the form of an excellent cover of Prince's "Kiss".
Vocal harmonies are a big part of the band's appeal. With three singers, songs can be divided up by style and vocal range. The instrumental versatility and extensive catalog makes for a great party band.
"Part of the fun", explains bassist-vocalist Marty Secero, "is putting ourselves out there and seeing if we can fulfill the requests of patrons."
Playing songs everybody knows and can sing along to has gotten the Zookeepers bookings everywhere from the Jersey Shore to Pearly Baker's in Easton.
Zookeepers came together in 1998, when Secero tapped his band mates - two of whom were high school friends - from the acoustic group Zaire. "We're animals about music," says Secero, explaining the band's name.
Although the Zookeepers' stage show samples sounds from different locales across the United States, that Jersey hometown flavor comes across in the form of four fun guys who like to show a crowd a good time.
